I have a large mpg file from which I remove some portions, scattered
along the file. Is there a software that will let me mark those
portions and the create a new file without the marked portions, in one
go?

Thanks for your time and attention

If you have XP, you might have Microsoft Moviemaker. It will do this but the
output will be in wmv format. You'll have to find a converter if you want
mpg again.

This one:

will convert to .avi at least. Then other software can take it from there.

I haven't used this program, so I don't know it's limitations. I suggest
that if anybody downloads it, that they read the user reviews at the
link I provided. Looks like PROmotionware to me from what I read though.

None are free, but if you want to keep it as MPG with no re-encoding, try
TMPGEnc MPEG Editor, VideoRedo or my personal favourite Womble MPEG Video
Wizard. These all use smart rendering to save out the video as a
direct stream copy, only re-encoding those frames that need to be
re-encoded in order to keep the correct GOP, at cut points, etc. This
means you could remove the adverts from a film and then save the new file
out in a matter of seconds because only the frames where the cuts were
made will be re-encoded, if needed that is. TMPGEnc MPEG Editor, and I
think VideoRedo both fully re-encode the audio if any changes are made to
it, like fades at the start or end. Womble MPEG Video Wizard doesn't, only
re-encoding the audio where the fades are added. They all re-encode it
though if the volume is changed. Womble MPEG Video Wizard also has a load
of filters that can be used, like fades, wipes and other very nice
effects. Also has a text editor and is the fastest out of the three in
terms of scanning through the video. TMPGEnc MPEG Editor is very slow as
it slows down to keep builing the thumbnails.

Note, when you add a filter or text, the portion where they are added is
fully re-encoded. So if you were to add a 2 second fade between two bits
of video, that 2 seconds would be re-encoded, but the rest of the video
will be untouched.

I'm amazed at you John after all your recent comments.

If you read the blurb on that page you quoted it says:

Strange, the readme file in what I downloaded says (direct copy and paste):

"STOIK Video Converter 2.1.1

Double-click STOIKVideoConverter211.exe to start installation.

This file will install STOIK Video Converter 2.1.1 or will update
earlier version of STOIK Video Converter.

NOTE: Freeware version 2.x will be upgraded to freeware version 2.1.1
and version 2.x PRO will be upgraded to the version 2.1.1 PRO

If you don't have the activation key (sold separately from
www.stoik.com) the program will run as Freeware version."

Also this page:

http://www.stoik.com/downloads/downloads_frm.htm

calls it freeware:

"Freeware
STOIK Video Converter 2.1 new!"

I think that c/net has it wrong.

"Stoik Video Converter Pro 2.1.1" is $ware - emphasis on *Pro*. ;) The
free version is STOIK Video Converter (the download for both is the
same). At worst Cnet's ware description is *incomplete* (as are many
ware descriptions on many sites).

Program: STOIK Video Converter
Author: Stoik Imaging
Ware: (Liteware) (Registerware: email) (free)
http://www.stoik.com/

http://www.stoik.com/products/svc/

</q>
STOIK Video Converter 2.1.1 (free)
Convert AVI, WMV, DV files in all possible combinations. Pick up one or
multiple source video files, select output audio and video settings
using preinstalled or custom profiles, and convert to single or multiple
output video files. Now supports DivX + MP3 AVI, Windows Media 9,
multiple file conversion, and file merging.

STOIK Video Converter 2.1.1 PRO ($29)
STOIK Video Converter 2.0 or 2.1 can easily be upgraded to a PRO version
in just few seconds upon purchase of activation key. Activation adds
video editing functions - cutting and filtering which makes the program
to be an all-in-one tool to cut, enhance, and compress your video
material. PRO version also supports import of QuickTime movies.

From Susan's post it does seem that CNET is incomplete and there may
be a free version but with a slightly different name to the product
you provided a link to. ...what a minefield this is!!

Yup. A complete and accurate ware description is the *exception*.

Please note: John furnished the right Cnet link. . . The author's
"download link" for the "Freeware" version of STOIK Video Converter
redirects to the Cnet web page that shows the Pro version (it's the same
file).

and it's NOT a *Cnet* problem - other download sites use similar
descriptions. for example:

Program: dBpowerAMP Music Converter (dMC)
Company: Illustrate
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
"mp3 encoder on 30 day trial license"
(all other features are forever free)

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dbpoweramp.html
"License Free Trial, $14.00 to buy"

http://www.download.com/dBpowerAmp-Music-Converter/3000-2140_4-10042534.html
"License Free to try; $14.00 to buy"
"Limitations 30-day trial"

Then there are all those apps that are free for personal use - mostly
labeled "Freeware" - occasionally labeled "Shareware" (IMO both
description are correct but incomplete).

I could go on and on. . . ;)

Hi Ian

Womble is all as you say, it is extremely good, but it is $ware and
the program is free to try for 30 days and that too requires to give
your email id to get the "trial" key.

Having "tried" I would say that it can cut a section from the start
or end or just one section somewhere in the middle, the cut marks
provided by the user.

What I need is something that will remove 'more than one' marked
section in one go., meaning the software must permit more than one
pair of cut marks and remove them all when saving the file.

Hope I have made myself clear

I've personally not seen any thing that will do that. Everything I've
ever used has required the in/out points for one area to be made, which is
then cut, then the next in/out points are marked, and so on, all which is
done before saving. Something more high end (and so may be expensive)
might.

Sandy,

I work with big mpeg files (2+hours) and was looking for the same thing
in freeware. Over the years, I have tried a bunch of different stuff
but didn't like anything I found. Either I had to convert the file to
something else and lose quality or suffered from bad audio synch after
being done.

I finally gave up and went payware. There is a great (and cheap)
program called VideoReDo <www.videoredo.com> that will do exactly what
you want; load a large file, mark many sections to be removed, then
write the new file out as one unit. It's also FAST since it only
re-encodes the small section around the cut.

I mentioned VideoRedo myself, but not having had experience with it wasn't
sure if it did anything like that. Nice feature, but I have to say, it's
GUI is pretty awful.:-)

Hi Ian

That was a wonderful pointer ! I tried in the Womble MPEG2VCR trial
version and it worked as suggested by you. Anyway I just had one file
that had to be edited.

Thanks to you and all the others, specially to Eric who found the
time and inclination to respond to my query.
