What are the free space requirements for a partition that has a 200MB xpe image? How much space does the FBA require? I'm thinking of making it 225MB.

Hi Nathan,

8 MB of raw, unallocated space supposed to be available on the hard
disk. This space is used to configure the EWF during the First Boot
Agent removed before deployment for runtime image. However the maximum
size for the overlay in Ram is in proportion to the available RAM.

Hi Kesavan,

8MB requirement is no longer (probably it was removed with SP1 or with QFE).
It is enough to have ~100 KB and volume gets created. (At least this is true on USB disks).

Disk manager is another story it can create partition sizes in increments of 8MB for disks with 512 bytes per sector. 16 MB for
disks with 1024 bytes per sector, etc (This is very strange thing and I fail to see why they did this in this way)

nathan/slobodon,

typo error :) go with slobodons words.Slobodon you shelled at the
right point.Hey but do you think there could be a purpose behind the 8
MB increment each time , probably could it be due to restrictions of
space .. ?

Hi Kesavan,

Windows XP was made to work usually with HDD which size is measured in many GB. So increment of 8,16,32 MB probably seamed
acceptable (I have no better explanation since it is not a problem technical problem but more problem related to user interface).
But you can create using your tools or third party tools partitions of any size and windows will know how to use it.
