Here are some free and compatible office programs that you can use without
buying microsoft office . They include word excel and others (their names
may be different but the use is the same)

The one that looks more like MS office is the 602 PC SUITE, and is very good
and free!
If you want to lean more about the openoffice.org project visit
www.openoffice.org
this is what they use on linux systems.

OpenOffice is great. I heard about OpenOffice from the
university where I work, all the computer guru people swear
by it. Most people actually prefer this free office suite
to MS Office, I know I do.

Doesn't compare to MS Office suites, nor to even the Corel WordPerfect
Suites, which is usable with MS Office. I used OpenOffice, and found it
nice, but not nearly as elaborate as MS office, nor supported.

Just curious. Can you use Visual Basic scripts and macros in the open office
spreadsheet program("excel") and be able to edit the VB macro/script? Also
does it do formulas in cells like excel?

the main problem is compatibility......
in some cases openoffice does not open properly MS doc files... and that is
its major problem in my opinion.

Have you seen the 602 office suit?

My understanding is that Open Office does have a basic-based scripting
language. It's not Visual Basic for Applications (VBA, the language
that MS Office uses), since that's proprietary to Microsoft. I don't
know details, but you could probably find out by exploring the
www.openoffice.org website.

Thanks. I'll look into it. The reason I was asking was I have a very complex
spreadsheet with formulas and vb macros for tracking bowling scores thru-out
the league year. Some other people I bowl with wanted it, but they didn't
have excel, so I was thinking maybe open office would work, but with all the
vb in it, it probably won't. I could make it into a real app, but that's a
little over my head right now.
