That's a confusing question!

Are you talking about encrypting email?

BairyHolox leapt out of the bath and screamed "EUREKA!" before
typing in alt.comp.freeware:

I've always been a big fan of Blowfish ACS, but it depends what exactly
you want to encrypt.

Whatever you point the encryption program at will be encrypted.

Sorry 4 being so vague- if I get a virus after all files have been
encrpyted will it be easy to see the file that has had the "forced
entry?" or will that be encrpyted as well- what I mean is the
encrpytion program working constantly like a firewall? any files I
download will be instantly encrpyted?
TIA

btw -love the EUREKA line -lol

Hi again- just tryed the TrueCRpyt site but it said that I shouldnt use
it as I have never had the service pack 1 or 2 on my copy(being the
operative word) of XP- my hard drive is 120gb just on the limit- can
you suggest anything else please? or is it...safe?

IOW - Plug the holes in Windows before you worry about encryption.

If you use a 'one time' encryption process ( i.e. you encrypt a file,
and it remains so until you decrypt it again ) then it's pretty much
safe. Were anything to be added to the file ( and I don't see how that
would be feasible given that the file would no longer present itself
to any other program as a valid file ) it would be subject to the
decryption process - and you'd soon know about it.

If you use 'on the fly' encryption ( whereby files are decrypted as
various programs require them and re-encrypted automatically when done
with ) then I don't see why an attached virus wouldn't also be
encrypted too.

If you're considering encryption as a defence against viruses it would
only really work if you could ensure there was no way for the files to
become infected in the first place - and there's no reason to suppose
that downloaded files are clean.
Once you decrypt the files and access then you're as vulnerable as you
can get.

In terms of security, encryption is related to privacy and theft
rather than file integrity.
