A while back someone posted that older versions of this ware were
adware. I've updated to the latest version (version 2, build 423) but A
Squared is calling it adware - any comments? This is my favourite mgr
and I'd like to keep it.

I cannot consider it adware although it does have a very small
non -intrusive text banner
on the top right corner.
its like foxit's small banner.. you hardly notice it.

Back in 2003 a version was released with NavHelper / NavExcel - that was
removed in the next version. AFAIK it's been clean ever since.

What's the message? This app is on PL2006 - if there's Adware it should
come off. OTOH it may be a false positive. . . Softpedia give the
current version a clean bill of health.

Softpedia guarantees that Free Download Manager 2.0 Build 423 is 100%
FREE, which means it is a freeware product (both for personal and
commercial use) that does not contain any form of malware, including but
not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors.

Well, I just downloaded & installed version 2, build 423 of Free
Download Manager & it isn't adware. I've been using Free Download
Manager for about a year & it is the best downloader which I have ever
used.

I'm guessing that A Squared has the info wrong & they need to update
their listing to mention that FDM is not adware.

I'm hoping its a false positive -

I'm hoping its a false positive -

Me too - and I'm inclined to think it is.

Thanks for uploading that info POKO. I'm not sure what it means (dummy
here) - if you do learn anything definite one way or the other please
post the information.

TIA

I think that it is a false postive but I found out that some sites are
distrubting versions of Free Download Manger which have adware in it.
For example, I found out from the website called Site Advisor which is
located at http://www.siteadvisor.com/ (Site Advisor is a freeware
plugin for Firefox & IE). The Site Advisor is a site owned by McAfee
but it checks out websites for adware/spyware software, spam emails, et
al.

According to their advisor page at
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/freedownloadscenter.com , the website
called Free Downloads center located at freedownloadscenter.com has
adware versions of Free Download Manager so the version that A Squared
says is Spyware might have been downloaded from from Free Downloads
Center or some other site. This is why it is very important to download
software from the author's website instead of these large download
sites.

erm. . .

That info is not about "Free Download Manager". See "Other information"
here:

"Title: Free Download Manager for uICE/-/Universal/Infrared/Control/Engine"

AFAIK in general it's the *author* who inserts Malware into an app.

FWIW - as is often the case with download sites, this download link was
a redirect to the author's web site/file.

"URL of the download:

Well, the page for Free Download Manager for
uICE/-/Universal/Infrared/Control/Engine listed above is for Free
Download Manager. Look in the box which says How does it modify my
system? & look in the middle of the box & it says
