Free/Busy Publishing while on vacation

I am a bit concerned about what I am seeing in free/busy and would appreciate
some assistance.

It looks as though free/busy is only updated if you are in Outlook or
trigger an event while in OWA. Is that true? And if so, what are people
doing about individuals who are out of the office for a week? Since
tentative meetings only appear after interaction, it seems as though it would
be very easy for individuals to be double booked.

Please tell me I am missing something or that there is a utility out there
to deal with this...

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Yes, that's how it works, and that's why the free/busy system is getting a complete overhaul in Exchange 2007 to eliminate the problems that you so correctly pointed out.

The solution for now is for people out of the office to delegate management of their calendar to someone else while they're gone.

I was thinking of something last night.
Would designate interaction with the vacationing user's calendar cause an
update of F/B (for example, viewing the calendar; accepting a meeting;
declining a meeting; etc...)? In looking at the architecture I cannot tell...

Any thoughts on that Sue? (Or anyone else who has some experience with it?)

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, *any* Outlook user's changes on that calendar folder will trigger an f/b update, but using the interval set for that user.
