AVG Free doesn't hog resources, and Avast! is also held in high regard. Both
are free.

I addition to the excellent programs people have already recommended there
are some free trials available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/viruses/wsc/en-us/default.mspx

Note these are not free software but free trials of varying lengths. I like
the Computer Associates free one year trial.

I have used both AVG and Avast. Both are excellent applications.

You'll undoubtedly get recommendations for both Avast and AVG, and perhaps
others. Personally, I'm happy with Avast.

I really like it too. Really cool interface. AVG's is a bit, well, not
very inspiring.

I too use Avast after a long time with AVG. Avast updates more frequently.
It also has three choices of interface with other skins available for
download.

The replies are great... However my mama told me once that there is
nothing in this world free. Something must be given up to get this
good "free" stuf... What is the catch here. there has to be!!

Nothing is given up other than some bells and whistles that aren't
needed.

Go for it.

No "catch" per se; rather a marketing strategy. If enough home users are
happy with products such as AVG and Avast, then the companies who
provide these programs have a better shot at the corporate market.

In addition, free versions may not have the same product support available
to you that the paid versions have. I have been using free AV apps for many
years, and am very pleased with their performance, and support has always
been more than adequate.
