In the following scenario, I need to get a handle on how often a drive
needs to degragmented - or how badly XP fragments a drive in the normal
course of events. We are trying to establish a system where we typically
do not have a lot of time to do any defragmenting.

newly defragged 20g hard drive, 5.5g free
adding 3-5 small Powerpoint files each week
sometimes adding 20-25 3meg jpgs

many thanks
Larry

If you are only adding and not deleting or modifying often you shouldn't
need to defrag very often.

Files become fragmented when modified and their size changes, or if files
are deleted and new files stuffed into the gaps.

Just set the PC to defrag automatically once a week during a lunch hour, or
at night and leave the PC running.
