Is it worthwile and meaningful to defrag a raid-0 system holding three IDE
drives?

Thanks and regards,
Klaus

Klaus,

As it is the file system that is fragmenting - regardless of disk technology
being used - it is worthwile and meaningful to defrag.

Thanks for explaining that, Greg. Is there any difference in principle
between defragging a RAID setup and a single hard disk? And is special
software needed to defrag a RAID setup, or will 'standard' defragging
software do the job?

Rocky,

All defragmentation is accomplished via Microsoft's defrag APIs. In
essense, no defragmenter "moves" files around - it is the file system itself
that performs all file "moves" when defragmenting.

No special software is needed - you can even attempt it using the built-in
defragmenter. No difference between defragmenting a RAIDx volume and a
single hard drive volume. The file system fragments equally well on both :)
