I created a .dwt page and attached it to all the web
pages. When I make a change on the template, it is not
updating the attached pages. On the template page
the "Update All Pages" is grayed out in the tool bar. I'm
editing the pages "live".

Your help is much appreciated......

The FP2003 DWT "Update All Pages" function works against disk-based sites,
and sites on servers running SharePoint Team Services or Windows SharePoint
Services. It does not work on sites running the FP 2002 server extensions.

Thank You, Kathleen

Ed:

I got around this by making my DWT out of Include Pages and an external
style sheet. Another words I used an include page for the header, an
include for the left menu and an include for the footer. Any changes I make
to the style sheet or the Include Pages update right away on all the pages
including the DWT. While this may seem like extra work once done I now have
the same funtionality as DWT by attaching them to any page I want.

Using include files is the way I've always done this.

But are you saying that you are using DWT and include files together?

If so, what benefits do you get?

Ken:

Open up a new page and Attach the DWT to it and you're off. Page layout and
design are automatically created on the new page and managable areas are set
so I can't mess something up by mistake.

I like them for the simple reason did you ever have a site and one page is
off? Every page looks the same, all the elements are in the same place
except just one page were something will shift left or down and you spend
hours comparing things and you can't figure out why. Finally it's something
stupid like setting cell spacing to 5 instead of cell padding.

With DWT's I'm protecting myself against myself :).

One more great reason to use DWT:

I recently created a new Web site for one of our admins at work. I created
one page using a pretty complex series of nested tables and Jscript menu
system. I then made that page a DWT after creating several editable
regions.

Now when our admin needs to create new pages for her site, all she has to do
is create a new page and attach the DWT. The page immediately is
"templated" and she can add whatever content she needs. Saves me a buttload
of work.
