i hate to start you folks off with a doozey, but, here it goes ;)

I am continuously having great difficulty saving my website to the
server. It seems to upload everything ok, than when it attempts to
*process the web updates* it hangs and eventually i receive the
*default timeout* error about the server error on port 80. It is a very
very large site about 3800 pages in length and i have already tried
setting up the sub-webs. I have tried following the interlacken.com
tips regarding *publish web command times out or produces incomplete
results* and finally i tried this fellas advice of deleting the
"doctodep.btr* and *deptodoc.btr* files and the CMDRuI file? Btw, what
are those files and are they important?

Lastly, i communicated my concerns with DreamHost (who is my web host
provider) to check their -timeout values which appear to be set at
about 6 minutes -3600.

I have a bloated Pentium III - 500mhz
512mb RAM
280 GB hard drive
win xp pro
FP2002 (i do not have server extensions installed on my computer)
Symantec Systemworks 2004 (Firewall & NAV-and believe me i tried to
disable these about a thousand times thinking they were to blame)

Kind sir or maam, i am at your mercy for an answer to this dilemna.

cheerio!

Six minutes? Boy, that's short! Hope you are trying to publish only
the changed pages and not the entire thing.

I was having a similiar problem with timeouts with HostSave. Took four
days, including middle of the night attempts, to edit my website (some
fool hacker had added unwanted script to the pages). Now I'm having
problems publishing the web back to my computer, but if you hang in
there, it will work eventually. Some functions seem to resume from when
they left off when you were cut off (find and replace seems to resume at
least).

I have a friend who runs www.arendkay.net he's real good and VERY available.
I've never waited more than 20 minutes for him to fix a problem for him.

You can say I recommended him if you like, though it probably won't do much
for ya. LOL

If you have deleted these: doctodep.btr and deptodoc.btr you need to recalculate
hyperlinks on your local web before you try publishing, and then "NEVER" delete them again
as they are how FP keeps track of file dependencies / links within your website.

The cmdui.prf is safe to delete as long as FrontPage is closed when you do it.
The other files to delete as long as all webs are closed are the *.web files for each
site.

Steve,

My question with regards to doctodep.btr and deptodoc.btr are as
follows, first off what type of files are these and secondly, when i
did a *search* in windows explorer for those two files it revealed
probably around 50 or 60 of these files locally. Should i be deleting
all copies of these two files?

Lastly, I often work on my sites remotely and rarely locally, does this
change the treatment options at all?

Thank you.

They are in all local webs (disc based or server based) on your PC in the _hidden _vti_pvt folder
- required by FP to manage each site
On a hosted server they are created on the server not on your PC

And No you should not be editing to deleting them or you will corrupt the FP web

Stefan,

I have found many of your replies to be of much use over the years,
nice to finally meet you in virtual person :)

Anyways, stefan, the problem that I am having is occurring during the
final phase of publishing my webs....I am receiving that generic
*time-out* error during the phase where FP is *processing web updates*.
It's that error that states that you server at www.yourdomain.com port
80 has encounter an error...blah blah blah* and i have tried almost
everything to correct this situation to no avail...im simply praying
that some new information has been unveiled recently as a workaround to
this dilemna....thanks!

Open your online web in FP and also run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
- then do some cleanup before publishing again

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Also make sure you don't have any files over 1MB in your web

Ask your host to check the server logs for any other clues

These files are used by Frontpage, so no, you can't delete them.
