Found New Hardware Msg

Recently, on my Compaq Presario 7598 which has Windows XP SP1, when I
turn my printer on, I get "Found new Hardware" msg. Once the msg
appears then I get "This shutdown was initiated by NT Authority/System
- the system process c:\windows\system32\services.exe terminated
unexpectedly with status code 128". I haven't installed or
uninstalled anything recently, so I'm not sure why this is happening.
I've checked the device manager and it doesn't show my printer. And
now when Windows Update tries to download the updates it gets to about
50% and disappears. I've researched the NT Authority/System error msg
and it keeps referring to a Windows 2000 server, which I don't have.

Can I disable the Plug & Play in the Services area? I see it has
dependencies so I wasn't sure if that would cause more problems.

Please Help, I'm at a lost!!

Thanks Doug for the suggestion. I followed the instructions and I
don't have a "shares" folder in that location of my registry,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares.
Anything else I can check?
