When restarting, there is a foul picture on the screen. Can someone tell me
how it got there and how to remove it. It disappears once the system is
totally loaded.

Probably is the previous wallpaper. Try changing the wallpaper. Some
times windows shows the previous wallpaper instead of the current one
during loading and shutdown, never understood why (never bothered to
research it either).

Might also be a system wallpaper or something. Dell and such use those.
Never looked into changing those.

Someone, or something, did this. Is your system fully patched, protected by
current/updated antivirus software, a firewall? Does anyone else have access
to it?
and how to remove it. It disappears once
the system is totally loaded.

1. Open Regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop.

3. Look for the Wallpaper value in the right-hand pane. Whatever you see
there is the location of the file in question (if you feel like looking
around in there, in the file system)

4. Double-click on the Wallpaper value.

5. Delete the contents and click OK.

6. Close Regedit.

Click start > run
Type "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft" (With quotes)
Click OK > Delete the image "Wallpaper.bmp"

At last someone with a brain replied correctly

the MVP was clueless... I am starting to wonder about the criteria these
MVP awards have...

Thanks for your charming and well-reasoned response. I notice you didn't
yourself reply to the OP with any constructive advice. I read the post as
meaning there was an image before login. This may or may not be true, but I
took a whack at it; if that *is* the case, my reply was correct. In the
future, if you find yourself with free time on your hands in here, you might
try replying to some posts with actual answers, rather than ill-mannered
critiques of other people's voluntary assistance. Or there's always the
exciting world of philately.

If the wallpaper shows up and then disappears after the login is completed,
the MVP is correct. If the wallpaper shows up after login and stays there,
Ayush is correct.
After re-reading the OP, I vote for the MVP.

I am a bit disappointed to see a MVP so sensitive regarding his reply to a
query.
My personal opinion, if at any time somebody would suggest a solution that
would prevent me from mucking around in the registry, right or wrong, I
think would be a very appreciative. "Angels fear to thread where fools rush
in." Haven't found any newsgroup that wasn't informative and helpful. Don't
feel offended.

I do not feel offended.
The remark about the MVP was totally uncalled for. She gave a correct
answer.

she? I thought it was a guy... if I knew it was a girl I would have spared
her the
irritating remark....

Thanks for the replys but I am that angle afraid to go places. I tried both
methods with no success. In regedit, I did not find the wallpaper value
inorder to delete its contents. As for the Start/Run "%userprofile%
theory, there is only one file relating to wallpaper. It is a beautiful pic
of the ocean and is called Wallpaper 1.

The picture appears after clicking restart. It appears only for a bit and
then disappears. It also appears (sometimes) after the system restarts and
then disappears and the desktop appears. If not a problem for system, I
could just leave it but I do have little Grandkids running around sometimes.
Thanks for everyones interest. By the way, no fighting kids.

go to START > SEARCH and COPY and PASTE this into the search box

*.jpg; *.bmp; *.jpeg; *.png; *.gif

All of it, then select the ADVANCED option lower down and put a checkmark on
the first 3 options....

then press seach but on the VIEWS icon switch it to thumbnails....

let it find all the images on your computer.. then scroll through them to
find that
one you see and DELETE IT

ALSO try this filename search

Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp

again put it in advanced search with the 3 first options selected and set it
to thumbail view...

tell me if this helps...

I think it will

:-) I knew you would find it that way... simple logic

Let the MVP sit and be taught by the Master ;-)
