Formulas that won't formulate

I have a largish spreadsheet (for me, anyway) of approx 30+ columns.
Recently I've been entering some VLOOKUP functions that won't
calculate. I've used the Excel tool for entering the parameters etc
but all that is displayed in the result cell is the formula itself not
the result. Any pointers as to why this may be? Regards, Ed

Hi Edward
maybe your cell ist formated as 'Text'. Check this and change the
format to 'General' and re-enter the formula

I have a similar problem with my big spreadsheet, the message appreas on the bottom "calculate' would not disappear and some cells are nor calculated. Will the larger memory in my computer solve the problem?

I would first check whether or not you have your "Auto Calculation" turned
off.
<Tools> <Options> <calculation> tab,
And make sure that "Automatic" *is* checked.

Another idea could be make sure that excel is not set show formula's.

Go to Tools>Options and on the View tab in the Window Options sectio
make sure that the Formula box is NOT checked
