formula rather than result displayed

I am adding formulas to a spreadsheet that was downloaded from another
program (each cell appears to be a text formatted cell) but rather
than the formula result being displayed the formula is being
displayed. I've done the CTL+~ and also the Tools|Options|View methods
of trying to switch between displaying formulas and results but always
the formula is being displayed. I assume there is something set on
this downloaded spreadsheet that is controlling this behavior but I
don't have a clue on what it is. Can anyone suggest how reset this
mode?

Try this, first select the range with the formulas, then make sure the
format is general, once that has been done do

Ctrl + H, replace = with =

replace equal sign with equal sign, that usually forces calculation

John, first select the range and do Edit, Clear, Formats. If you do this
before you enter formulas, you won't have any problem. If not, then Peo's
approach of changing = to = will work, but I suspect you have to first clear
the formats for it to work.

Thank you Bob and Peo.

Each of your solutions worked! Bob's solution was a little more
permanent, using Peo's technique I had to reapply it every time I
modified teh formula.
