Formula help!!!

I am currently trying to figure out a short cut to
calculate a series of numbers for a class. Here is the
scenario:
I have 12 numbers in twelve cells (B2:B13). I need to
square each individual number then sum the total of all of
those numbers.
I have tried different formulas for SUM reference but no
go. I discovered that there is a function, POWER, that I
can use but it is not working out despite what others have
told me to do. Please help me with the formula anyone.
I have Excel 97 if that makes a difference.
