am trying to do simple addition and subtraction ( in a financial
spreadsheet). But the answer to an addition of values in a noncontiguous
series of cells is frequently shown as a date instead of a number. I
understand that Excel is counting days instead of numbers , but how do I stop
this ?

You have posted this message to the wrong newsgroup.
The access in this groups name refers to Microsoft Access, a database
program.
Please repost to the correct newsgroup for Excel. I would suggest you
include your Windows and Office version number in the message.

This is an Access newsgroup however, if you format the cell as a number
rather than a date it should solve your problem.
