Don't use the command prompt. Set your CD ord DVD-ROM to
the first boot device and boot to the Windows XP CD.

Also, make sure you have all of your files backed up on
floppy or CD-R/RW. Doing a wipe of your hard drive will
delete everything on the hard drive.

You can't do it that way. Boot from the XP CD, it has all the tools to
partition, format, and reinstall XP.

Greetings --

You're trying to format the drive from within WinXP. You can't.
This would be the computer equivalent of sawing off the tree limb
you're sitting on.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
