Hi There! I've recently purchased a new computer where XP Home edition was
pre-installed on the system (didn't receive any cd's but am going to make
copies of XP onto blank disks)... I recently found that I had various
viruses on my computer, so I reset the computer back to factory settings,
which helped some what, except that now I think I have picked up a virus that
is transported thru kazaa. worm.aspiv.a (W32.HLLW.Chemsvy).

My problem is, I would like to format c: but aren't quite sure how to go
about it... I've read a few help sites on reformatting ur hard drive, but am
a little apprehensive about going through with it until I have a full
understanding of what I'm doing as this is the first time that I've had to
format a computer using XP and aren't sure what I need to have BEFORE I
format C:??? (as I don't currently have any boot disks, or XP disks). I
also have a partioned drive which is where the recovery side of things are
kept... If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated!!

Thank you..... Desiree

p/s: I also have one other problem... I'm unable to access any of the
folders that are stored in my documents as it keeps saying that access is
denied. I think I changed the security on these folders before I
re-installed XP, and now they wont work because I forgot to reallow entry to
them before cleaning my pc... Is there anyway that I can gain access back to
these folders again? Or, will this happen once I format C:???

Desiree;
Your computer manufacturer used a partition for the Restore feature of
your computer.
Normal Microsoft fixes do not apply since you use a Restore partition
instead of a Windows XP CD.
Check your manual and/or contact the computer manufacturer for
details.
Find out how to get or properly make the CDs necessary to reinstall
Windows.
There is much more than just copying a few files.
Again the manual or manufacturer has the details.

For access Denied, #9 on this link:

Lastly, get rid of Kazaa, it is known to bring spyware, viruses and
other malware to computers.

I'm not sure what partition your My Documents is on but if its on C: the
formating C: will cause you to lose your documents!
You can right click on My Documents go to security / advanced / owner and
click on take ownership. (make sure that replace owner on subcontainers is
checked)
As far as the no cds goes, do you have the XP sticker on your pc with the
product key? otherwise this is no a legal copy, and you need to speak to the
person who supplied you the pc, if there is a sticker you still need to
speak to them to find out where your cds are. you will not be able to make
cds from what you have installed on your system, you would have to get the
origionals from someone and copy them(assuming you have your own product
key)
Have you thought about just downloading a free antivirus program such as
avg?
To reinstall your pc, just put in the windows xp cd and boot up with the
cdrom as the first boot device, remembering that if you choose to format
your pc (if you dont the virus will still be there) you will lose all your
data.
One last thing, if you have to use kazaa(i never would) use kazaa lite, as
apparently there is no spyware on it, and then, you have to use an antivirus
program and peer2peer organisations are full of viruses.

I have never heard of a company using a partition of you hdd instead of a cd
for system recovery - have they thought far enough ahead as to what would
happen if the drive crashes? I would never accept buying a pc and not
getting the cds with it.

Steven;
Been around for several years.
HP is one that does it.
HP finally started giving a way for users to make Recovery CDs...Once,
but many never do.
If the hard drive dies and you are out of warranty, guess what else
you buy besides a hard drive...Windows or whatever OS you want.

Compaq is one of those. Some models come with Recovery CD (which uses the
Factory PQI image in the D:\ partition), while some models come with Quick
Restore CD *which itself* contains the Factory image. Note that Compaq/HP
has merged more than a year ago. The post-merger series of HP/Compaq come
with a Hidden partition, with an option for the end-user to create the
Recovery CD set before removing the partition. They ship the restore CD only
if you demand. (again depending upon the series/model)

BTW, my previous message was directed to Steven.

:)
Oh well, guess its one of those things you cant change!
Have still never come across it though, but then again I live in south
africa, we probably just haven't caught up yet! :)

IBM does it too...
and when the HDisk crashes (which happened to me), they send you without any
charge the cd-set of your OS.
