Formatting with Win98

I'v managed to get to the drive C: and now trying to format the HDD with
Win98 startup disk. It stops at 13th % and comes up with error message,
"Format terminated". There's a file or volume or subdirectory who's name is
in machine code hence I don't know what's it called. This file is preventing
format to go any further. Obviously, I Could not run Window Explorer or
delete this file from DOS prompt. So, I tried to access the file with an
older application called XTpro, running from drive 'A', I found out that the
volume or whatever it is, is Read Write protected. But the problem is, this
bone of contention wouldn't let me change its properties either and I can not
get rid of this problem.
Any suggestion on how to make my HDD usable again!

Download the Hard drive manufacture's drive Utility and write Zeros to the
drive. There are also some generic utlities that would wourk as well.

Hi,

As you were going to format anyways, delete the existing partition and
create a new one from the free space. I would recommend that you not use a
Win98 startup disk, but rather use the WinXP drive tool made for this
purpose as part of setup (after all, after formatting you are going to have
to do a clean installation anyways - you do know this, right?)

Delete partition/create partition/format partition = problem gone.

I hope you have backed up recently!
