I'm trying to install windows xp onto my laptop that
currently has windows 2000 on it. the problem is that
when i go through setup, it doesnt ask me if i would like
to format the drive, as it did with my other pc, that had
windows 98 on it. How might I format the drive completely
and install xp?

Are you "booting" from the XP CD or running "setup" from within Win2k?
If the latter, boot from the XP CD and there you'll get the option to
delete and create partitions, from there you can delete/create then
format the partition(s). Note: If the partition is greater than
32GB, then XP will only allow formatting as NTFS - if you need a FAT32
partition greater than 32GB, then once you delete the partition from
the XP setup, abort the XP setup and boot with a Win98 Bootdisk, then
using fdisk/format recreate a FAT32 partition of your liking.

You need to install xp cd,restart computer, boot to xp cd (might
need to set to this in BIOS,boot priority),then select install xp at
info page,new copy,delete current partition,create,then let xp
format and install.
