Formatting table cells

In Word 2003 is there any way to format table cells to have, for
example, the $ symbol and a comma indicating thousands?

If you use a formula, you are given the option for several number
formats, including one for currency. Is there any way to format a
column of manually-entered cells with the same format?
 
Unfortunately, no. Word provides a method of automatic formatting only for
fields. Is this something for which you could embed an Excel sheet?

I wrote here for something similar awhile ago and the best I could come up
with in Word was a separate column just wide enough for the $ sign (no border
 
Hmm, with this approach, a decimal tab would be more useful (no manual
tabbing required).

Thanks for the suggestions. My solution, which is OK as long as you
don't have too much to deal with, was to copy the table column in
question, paste it into Excel, format with the desired "currency"
numeric format, and then copy and paste back into the Word table.

This is one of the times that I really miss WordPerfect.
