I am trying to format my hard drive. I had Windows XP on
my computer and I want to re-format and start over. I
have a Windows 98 startup disk, and I need step-by-step
instructions on how to accomplish this. When I am done, I
want to reload XP onto my system. Also, I have Me (read
many errors!) on my laptop, and want to put XP on it. Can
I use the same steps to accomplish this?

Thank you in advance,
Bob

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

To do this:

Step 1 is to have your computer off, and insert the win98
disk.

Step 2 is to turn it on and wait for the win98 screen to
come on, when it comes up then press start computer with
cd rom support.

Step 3 is when it finish loading type in "format c:" or
whatever is your local drive, it will take time to
format, then (if u have cd rom boot) to restart (before
put in winxp disk) and you should be able to start setup.

Since it's a good bet XP is using NTFS, you would not be able to use the
format command from the Win 98 boot disk. You can delete the XP partition
from fdisk, then create a new dos partition to format from the format
command.

Format XP using NTFS or FAT.
