Hi, I installed 2000 on a new machine a year ago without partitioning the
hard drive first. I experienced a trogan horse attack a short while ago and
to rid myself of all the files it placed on the machine i'm determined to
remove the current installation and partition the hd for to install both
Linux and Win2k. I need to know the best way to go about this. The
re-installation part i am happy with but as fdisk is not a facility in win2k
installation how can i format an unpartitioned hd and rid myself of all
previously saved files?

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Hi Dave,
I had tried that using the win2k cd but got absolutely no response. I
waited for about 5 minutes for the machine to react but it did nothing.
Should i get a response? Is there any alternative to using the setup disks?

What do you mean by 'no response'? What does the screen say when you turn it
on?

Possibly set the boot order in cmos setup to CD-Rom first in boot sequence.
Even though you set the boot order to CD-Rom first some bios (I know Dell
does this) requires you to hit F2 (or some other key) to boot from CD-Rom at
POST. Failing this boot the setup disks.

Sorry Dave but my reply was quite confusing. I have been able to boot from
the cd and can also do so from floppy but when i choose to either delete or
format the drive i get no response. There is no screen response, beeps,
nothing! It just won't delete. As i said i waited for about five minutes for
a response but didn't get any and abandoned the installation. I have been
working from a new installation but obviously old files weren't over-written
which was what i wanted to do. I also would like to partition the machine but
this is something which i also can't do from the boot cd. I'm not sure where
to go next?

Did you try a Win98 Boot Disk?

Some other ways include; boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk and delete all
partition information found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or use a utility
named delpart.

Thanks all for your help but as it turned out, it was a BIOS problem.
S.M.A.R.T. for hard drive wasn't enabled. Once i enabled that i had no more
problems. Thanks again!

You're welcome.
