My Win98 PC has virus "issues" and I would like to
completely format my drive before upgrading to XP Pro.
How can I do this? I run through the XP "new install"
option when installing XP but when it's done I still have
files/folders left over from my previous Win98
installation. I want to completely erase everything from
this drive so I have a fresh starting point for XP.

I don't know how to reformat a drive?

If I do, will my CD drive recognize the XP disk or do I
need to worry about copying CD drivers?

Boot from the Windows XP CD. During the install, setup will look for a
current install of Windows XP, and find the one that is there now. It will
ask if you want to repair/update this install. Say no to any repairs. You
will then be shown the current partitions on you drives. Choose the one
where XP is installed now. It will ask if you want to format the partition
and what file system you wish to use. . Say yes, and use the NTFS format.

After the format has completed the install will continue. Upon the 1st
reboot, do NOT press "any key" to boot from the CD. Allow the computer to
boot through to the hard drive. Setup will continue.

Hi Doug,
On the actuall xp disk i am sure that it allready has a format option on it so make sure you look out for that.
Just incase it hasnt you can use something like a WINDOWS 98 BOOT DISK. On the boot disk it has a format option wtih other menues.
Just a suggestion there is other ways but as a few people might know but the windows 98 boot disk is a very usefull tool when it comes to formatting.
Hope it can help

To CLEANLY install Windows XP..
Go here. Follow closely:

Your hard drive data should not affect whether or not the Windows XP CD is
recognized. That SHOULD be a BIOS consideration. Can your computer BOOT
from CD?

Thank you all for your help. The problem was that I was
not booting from the XP CD. I needed to change the bios
to boot from CD then choose to delete the partition
during XP install.
