Formatting CD and copying from Drive A to Drive D

I need to know how to format a new CD and I want to transfer my novel from Drive A to a backup copy on drive D
 
You do not need to format a cd like you need to format a cdrw which you can
use for packet writing. Copy information that is on
A drive to a folder then write that folder to a cd. Jym

you do not need to format a CD, but to use drop and drag for a CD-RW you
must format for packet writing....
