Just allowed a friend to format my harddrive thinking i could use the restore
console disk to get the factory defalts back on my cpu and start from
scratch. Of course it didn't work and tech support of the company the cpu is
from cannot help me either. My question is this, will i have to purchase a
whole new windows xp disk or can i use a friends and enter my key. This is a
lesson welll learned about backing up one's computer but really need some
insite on this. My hp recovery console cd won't work because it says it
cannot find user licence aggreement now i'm stuck with a very heavy
paperweight on my desk even tho all the stuff is original and purchased by me.

You can clean-install XP by using a generic OEM disk and using the
Product Key on the sticker on your computer. The Product Key is your
license, not the physical media. An even better solution is to find a
tech who has an HP install disk instead of a generic OEM, but either
will work. Since I don't know what version of XP your friend has, I
can't answer whether his will work with your key or not but if it is
*not* a generic OEM or an HP OEM it won't.
