I am getting the following message from command prompt
when trying to format c drive:

Format can not run because the Volume is in use by
another Proces. Format may run if this volume is
dismounted first.

ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.

THANKS FOR THE HELP
TOM

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary to
partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow Windows XP
to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your omputer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website of
the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any available
Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter and audio drivers.

You can't format the system partition while it is in use.

Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.
Format XP using NTFS or FAT.

The responses to questions such as this, while technically correct,
might benefit from a little investigation before giving out the
information required to perform this rather drastic step. After all, if
someone doesn't know HOW to format his/her main hard drive, perhaps
his/her decision TO format was equally ill-informed.

It's sort of like the patient with a foot blister coming to the doctor
and saying, "It hurts when I start to saw my leg off. What should I
do?" To which the doctor replies, "Inject a local anesthetic first,
before you begin to saw. That way, it won't hurt."

You can't format C: from Windows if Windows is installed there.

If your intent is to reinstall WIndows XP, and you have an
installation CD, just boot from the XP installation CD and follow
the prompts.

If your intent is to install a version of Windows 9X, boot from a
bootable diskette.

You cannot format the partition the system is running off - this is like
trying to cut off the tree branch you are sitting on. You do it as part
of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD direct. Enter
Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install. When it asks
you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current partition
and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage
