You cannot format the "C:" drive while Windows is running. You'll have to
boot from the Windows XP CD to format it.

Hi,

Why are you attempting to format C:? You have to do it as part of a clean
installation, you cannot dismount the drive and format while Windows is
running.

You can't format the C: drive. That's the computer
equivalent of sawing down the branch that you are sitting on.

You can reformat the C: drive by using the Windows XP
install disk or the manufacturer's recovery disk. This will
destroy everything on the C: drive and you will have to
reinstall everything.

Cheers,

Cliff

That's probably the best analogy I've ever heard used to explain this! ;-)

You cannot do it from within the system you are running on it; that is
cutting out the ground underfoot.

You have to do it as part of a clean reinstall. In your case by
whatever means Gateway supplied for 'Restore' to ex factory state (back
up first - you will lose everything that was not there when new)
