I have a older computer with 98 SE on it, and it has 2hard drives which are pretty junked up. I want to format both those hard drives and then reinstall my old windows 98 SE on one of them. Can i connect these hard drives to my WinXP machine and then format them from that computer? Or is there a way to format them on the computer there attached to ? I have a 20 GB disk and a 6 GB disk with windows 98 SE installed on it. I figure i can format the 20 GB disk as windows is installed on the other. Then id be left with one hardrive with windows installed on it. CAn you format a harddrive that windows is installed on from that computer? I thought you have to attach it to another computer and then format It from there. If anyone know how to format Hard drives with XP or win 98 SE, [ i think through dos, but i dont know how] please post a reply or just send me a email at (e-mail address removed).

type "format drive:" drive being the one you want to format of course :>

Hi stragitio,

Thanks for the help on the formating. Also can i format the harddrive that windows is on with this procedure? Will some read only files cause errors or anything? Basically is anything stopping me from formating the enire harddrive and erasing windows completly? [ Which i what I want to do]

If you boot from the Windows 98 floppy, there's nothing stopping you
from formatting all the partitions on that computer. Just type format
C:
and then format D:
(Supposing C and D are the drive letters)

No file should be trouble, even if they are read-only, because the
system is booting from the floppy and using the floppy's programs.
The harddrive will be left clean for whatever OS you want to install
there, or to be used entirely for data.

Good luck
