Hi,

I just formatted my friends hard drive and am in need of a little help.

He has WIN XP on CD ROM, which came with his system, so I just need to know
what I type in at the DOS prompt to boot it up. I am use to having WIN 98
and the start up floppy to do this. Not sure how to do this with just the
CD.

thanks

Assuming the machine is set to boot from CD just pop the CD in the drive and
reboot the machine. The set up should start automaticly......

If your friend has a computer from one of the major players (Dell, HP,
Gateway, E-machine etc.) you boot from the CD and follow the instructions.
During the recovery choose appropriately when presented with a question.

You just need to go into the bios screen set up , its
either the F2 or F1 or the delete key to enter into the
bios , Once there check and see whether the "boot" order
has the CD Rom selected first , In most case its usually
on the floppy first , if this is the case ? Just change
the ordewr so that the first options is CD Rom ,
afterward just save that setting and restart the computer
with the xp cd in the cd rom drive , This will start the
set up options of windows xp , When you see on the
screen hit any key to start , just do so and the way you
go ...

A boot diskette is a thing of the past, as all legitimate WinXP
installation CDs are already bootable.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Your post was very authoritative and made it sound as if one of these
keys was the only way to access system BIOS. Unfortunately, there are
as many different key and key combos to access BIOS as there are
versions of BIOS out there - too many to even begin to list.

The best rule of thumb about accessing BIOS is to watch the splash
screens when you first power up the system. It *usually* presents you
with what you have to do do to enter BIOS (or it may refer to it as
SETUP).

Even then, not every splash has this info.
