I apologize in advance if this is the wrong group to ask; if so could
someone direct me to the correct one.

I have three older computers [one running XP; one 98 and one 95]. I am in
the process of giving them away but want to first reformat the disk to get
rid of everything there [banking information, passwords, business emails,
etc.]. Can anyone tell me the best way to do this? TIA.

Thanks. I'll give them a try.

You can use 3rd party software. Here are some free ones:
http://killdisk.com/
http://dban.sourceforge.net/
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
http://www.wizard-industries.com/?cf_adx=1315788637519

Depending on how they work, you may be able use 2 or more of them.

Reformat will NOT destroy confidential information. Almost anything on a
reformatted disk can be recovered.

Your best bet is to remove the hard drives and shoot them with
armor-piercing ammunition. Or burn them.

I would use Eraser. It seem to be an "open-source" utility and has a secure
disk eraser (aka as nuker.) It has military grade erasing.

Thanks. I'll give them a try.
