ConHook Trojan got me. PC Tools ran me around for three days so now have a
blue screen. Can reboot safe mode to c:

Attempt to reinstall OEM CD XP SP1, but message says I have a newer OS so no
go. Try the newer SP2 upgrade CD but also no go.

Try to format c: from the command prompt but it says the system's in use and
can't be locked.

Any ideas, please.

Boot from install CD. Will format and reinstall from there without issue.
Install SP2 upgrade CD *BEFORE* putting the system onto the internet...

Next time do not download any trojans. And, dont install any if you
accidentally download one.

Install Vista.

It will fuss like the third monkey on Noah's gangplank most every time you
try to download a trojan.

Thanks, but it won't boot from the original install (SP 1) CD. Says there's
a newer OS (SP 2) already on the system...which their is, but it doesn't work
any more.
How can I format from DOS at the command prompt and "lock"the drive?

Um, the Black Hats are waiting for Vista to have a 10% market share
before they start attacking it and when they do, Vista will be no safer
than any other Windows version.

If you have another computer and you know what brand name hard drive you
have on the problem computer, go to the hard drive manufacturer's web
site and download the formatting and partitioning CD ISO and burn it to
a CD and use that to format and partition the problem computer and then
install XP again.

If you boot of the CD, no matter what's installed on your system.
You probably dont do it right.
If you have any brand name computer, most likely if wont even show you
the option to change the boot order.
As soon as you start the PC, try following keys:
F12 - afaik works on IBMs, DELLs and probably HPs. It should bring the
boot menu, then you select CD-ROM. Then the XP installer starts, and
it doesnt care if the corrupted system is SP2, 1, no SP, or if it's
win2k, or whatever.
F2 or DEL - that will bring you into the BIOS menu. What you need to
look for there is the BOOT ORDER section. Make sure to move your CD-
ROM on the top, to be the first device to be searched for. MAKE sure
to save the configuration, put the CD into the drive, and reboot.
Almost definitley you will have about 2-3 seconds in the beginning of
the boot process to hit any key on the keyboard when you see "Please
hit any key to boot from the CD... " message. I hope i dont need to
tell which key is any key :D

I think what your running into, is you're not telling it to remove the old
OS, and start from scratch. It's been quite some time since I have had to
do this, so I forget the exact steps. You must be choosing something like
"repair" the current install or something. Read the options carefully, and
hopefully you will arrive at your desired result.
