When I copy and paste a list of social security numbers into a worksheet
and change the format to social security number, nothing happens unless
I click on the F2 key and press enter. Then the format changes to
social security number. I'm using Excel 97. Is there any way to
change the appearance to social security format without having to F2
"enter" every cell? This takes a long time when I have thousands of
cells.

Thanks,
Aaron

It sounds as though the numbers that you pasted in are being treated as
text, instead of a number. To change the data to numbers:

1. Select a blank cell, and copy it
2. Select the cells that contain the pasted numbers
3. Choose Edit>Paste Special
4. Choose Add, click OK.
