Format/control lines problem

i have somehow turned the document control lines on and now every time i
create/open a document all the control/formating lines also appear on my
document. I use MS 2000 on XP. How do I turn them off?

Tools > Options > View > Text boundaries

I believe i used the wrong term ... instead of the control lines ... i
should have said the control instructions for the page ... still not sure if
that is the right term. All the details of how the page is setup are on the
document page .... like Word Perfect used to do.
 
Can you describe what these look like?

I made a test file with only the first line of the following and the rest comes up after saving and re displaying ...

I have no idea what I did and don't know how to make it go back to the
original way it was. Thanks
 
That's what you get when you open a document while the "Files of type"
box in the Open dialog is set to "Recover Text from Any File".
Unfortunately, if you save while the document looks like that, you
lose all the formatting and save all the junk, so don't do that!

Click File > Open. At the bottom of the dialog, change the "Files of
type" box to "Word Documents" or "All Word Documents".

In Word 2000, if you use the Recover Text setting, it sticks there
until you change it to something else. In later versions, it
automatically switches back to Word Documents after one use,
specifically to avoid the problem you have.
