Format cells for Duration?

I can't figure out how to format cells for a duration.

i.e. I'd like to enter 1 hour 25 minutes and 30 seconds as 1:25:30

But it always shows up as a physical time, 1:25:30 AM

I keep a record of track times when I run, and would like this feature.

If you can't find the appropriate format in Format/Cells/Number/Time
(mine has "13:30:55"), use Format/Cells/Number/Custom [h]:mm:ss

I tried that, but when you click in the field and liik in the fx you see it
displayed as time. 1:25:30 AM

that's because XL doesn't distinguish between time of day and elapsed
time. They're both stored as fractional days (e.g., 3:00 AM and 3:00:00
are both stored as 0.125).

It displays okay in the cell with [h]:mm:ss, but the fx line for 54:23
reads: 1/2/1900 6:23:00 AM

This makes it hard to do a calculation, i.e. an average time per mile, etc.

If it displays ok in the cell, why is it hard to use in a calculation?

A1: 54:23
A2: 11 <=== miles
A3: =A1/A2 <=== formatted the same way as A1...
