I need to format my CDRW discs in direct format so files can be written
straight to them. Can anyone tell me how to format them please? I
can't see a way in the various Windows XP menus. Thanks.

See this link for an excellent article on burning CD's in XP. Not sure
what you mean by direct format and writing straight to them, but if you
mean writing to them as one writes to a floppy disk or hard drive, that
can't be done with native XP tools. Third party packet writing software
is needed. XP treats CDRW disks the same as CDR.
