Thanks for the reply folks. The fix, for anyone interested:
It appears XP home installation (format option) will not recognise large
harddrives >130gig.
When XP is installed you must also then install SP2. Then go to disk
management and create your D drive with the unallocated space. The
unallocated space will not show up until SP2 is installed.

Two out of the three replies you received included the information you just
supplied.
Thanks for the feedback, but you should keep replies to the original thread
rather than start a new one.
If you setup a newsreader, you will find it much easier to navigate the
volume of posts in this group.
