Form Fields in Word 2000

Does anyone know how to insert a symbol such as a
checkmark into a form field in Word 2000.

I've created a template with text and regular text form
fields and protected my document but when I try to enter a
checkmark into any of the fields with either insert symbol
or a keyboard shortcut key the field won't allow it - what
gives? I can unprotect the document, insert the symbol
but then if I reprotect the document I lose the data
previously entered. I don't want to use the checkmark
field as it inserts a box and X not a checkmark. I need to
be able to enter a checkmark or a phrase.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you want a check box in a protected document, you have to use a check box
form field. Or you can insert section breaks and unprotect the section
containing your check box.
