I desperately need to force DMA on my Primary IDE channel
and although DMA if available is set it always comes up
in PIO mode!! I need to force DMA, how do I do this??

Go into the device manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers click the advanced tab for the primary or secondary IDE channel and set both device 0 and 1 to DMA if available, reboot and it should Change to DMA

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have tried this.
Even tried uninstalling Primary IDE controller. I
purchased a UDMA 80 cable and still no DMA!!!

I has to switch both master and slave hard drives to PIO, rebooted, switched both back to "DMA if available", and reboot...I now have both master and slave in DMA mode...finally! I also add to previously switched CMOS to enable the Ultra DMA Support.
