Hi Ben-
Sorry for delay, but have had a full plate this week.
Which version of Word are you using?
Is there a 'Locked' checkbox? If so, remove the check.
If I recall correctly, prior to XP (2002) links to files of the same type
did not allow for Auto vs manual updates. That would account for the dimmed
status, but that actually applies only if you have both files open at the
same time. If the source & client files were open at the same time (by the
same user) any changes made in the source file 'automatically' updated in the
client. XP & '03 allow this to not be the case.
However, if the source is _not_ open, you should be prompted to update the
link when opening the client file. This prompt should appear regardless of
version or update status.
Also, in reviewing your original post, I wonder if I may have misinterpreted
your concern. Are you possibly expecting changes in the client file to update
the source. If so, that isn't going to happen... links are 'one-way' channels
of communication from the source to the client.
Or did you perhaps, mean that while working in the client you want the link
content to constantly update based on changes being made by another user in
the source? This is something that may sound good in theory, but would be a
nightmare in terms of practicallity. Updating the link on demand, even quite
frequently, is a far more efficient process.
Please let me know if I am still not tuned in! |:>)
