When I started recently a directory and volume scanner for my partition C: I saw to my surprise
a new folder "System Volume Information" which occupies approx 735 MB !!!

What is the purpose of this folder?

The folder contains a subfolder named

_restore{A.......}

Which in turn contain a number of sub sub folders named

RP242,RP241,RP240,.....

What the hell is this?
How can I get rid of these folders?
How do I switch off the generation of these folders?

Frank

Do you want to use System Restore? If not, right click on My Computer. Go to
properties/System Restore. Turn it off!

Hi

That folder holds the files for System Restore. Altering anything in there
may cause SR not to fuction properly. If want to reduce the size of that
folder, you can amend the amount of disk space allocated to SR. Right click
on My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Highlight the appropriate drive and click 'Settings...'. Move the slider to
the left. I have that slider set to 500 MBs which gives me 6/7 checkpoints.

don't touch it, windows needs it. You've turn off "hide protected
operatin system files" from the view menu hence it appearing

This is your System Restore data which allows your to return your
machine to an earlier point in time if you have problems. You can
delete the files by turning off system restore. You can also limit the
size of the directories through system restore.

Hi Frank,

This is the System Restore folder, and those sub-directories contain the
various restore points available to you. You can decrease the size by
reducing the percentage of space available to System Restore in the Control
Panel/System applet. This folder is normally a hidden system folder, so is
not visible unless you have adjusted the view settings in folder options.

The System Volume Information is the folder in which WinXP's
System Restore feature stores information used to recover from errors.
By default, WinXP sets aside a maximum of 12% of the partition's size
for storing System Volume Information, but the amount of space set
aside for this purpose can be adjusted by the user. Start > All
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > System
Restore Settings, select the pertinent partition and click Settings.

That is bad advice, dangerously bad. Tantamount to telling someone to
jump out of an airplane without a parachute.
