In resposne to posts from dustin and vidano.
1) accessing sedcure or unsecure site.
2) re-explanation of 'access denied' resulting from
firewall premissions being wrong.
1) I do not think what i posted is related to problems
accessing a secure site.
1a)If you have problems accessing an 'unsecure' site:
That should be an advanced setting in Internet Options
under the 'security' tab click on 'custom level'.
Then change the settings that are 'disabled' to 'prompt'
in all the areas. IT WONT HURT TO REMEMBER WHICH WERE
DISABLED!
Then return to the secure site.
If it fixed your problem you will see a dialog box asking
if you want to access the unsecure site.
Read the descriptiuon that may explain what is unsecure.
It should be similiar to one of the things you checked
and you can then re-disable the others and enable that
one.
Hope thats not too confusing.
1b) if it IS a secure site or is not the helped by the
above, send me an email with the exact error message.
2) The fix i mentioned in the original post deals
specifically with losing 'admin' rights to certain
functions of XP even though the user has HAS admin
privelege.
AN example is: double clicking on the date/time in the
system tray results in an 'access denied' error.
You need to read up on your firewall. You should do that
nayway it is a must to know what it does and what you are
doing with it.
Some firewalls not only let you control what programs can
access the internet but also what programs are even
allowed to run or are allowed to launch other programs.
I use Kerio Personal Firewall, which has these abilities.
I believe the very popular Zone Alarm does as well.
No doubt many do.
If you are using winxp's built in firewall, I do not
think this error would happen though I am not positive.
To TEST if it is your firewall causing the problem
1) Disconnect the internet cable from the computer.
2) Disable the firewall (usually by right clicking on its
icon in the system tray at the lower right of your
screen).
3) repeat the action that kept getting the access denied
error.
4) If it works go to step 5 below.
4a) If this does not work, then keep hunting, you'll find
a solution.
5)You have verified that you do not get the error when
the firewall is disabled SO:
right click the firewalls icon in your system tray and
leftclick 'settings' or 'options'.
6) Look for a 'system' or 'programs' tab and choose it.
if you cant find it begin hunting in every tab. Be
careful not to change anything if you dont know what it
does.
7) You are looking for a rule that says 'run dll as an
app' or something VERY similiar. It may
say 'rundll32.exe'.
8) when or if you find it, edit the permissions for it to
read 'ask' or 'permit'.
I would go with 'ask'.
apply your settings and close out of the settings or
options .
re-enable your firewall and try the action that caused
the error again.
It ought to work now.
plug your internet cable or card back in.
hope this helps.
If it does drop me an email please.
