When I insert a footnote on a page, the no i.e. 1 or 2 is repeated below the
last line of text on the page. How do I suppress these numbers?

I'm not sure I understand. When you insert a footnote, the idea is to insert
a reference number in the text and a similarly numbered note at the bottom
of the page (which you type into the Footnote pane). Are you seeing
something different?

I'm wondering if you're using the Footnote feature just to get superscript
numerals. If that's the case, you can apply the Superscript property to
ordinary text manually, either through the Font dialog or by selecting the
number and pressing Ctrl+Shift+=.
