I have changed style of footnotes so that they default
properly now (i.e., as to font and para. styles), and
added it to Normal.

But the line separator seems to have to be manually fixed
each time.

How can I get to the style that controls the line
separator so I can adjustmargin, etc.?

I have tried modifying Normal based on Footnote text... to
no avail.

In Normal view, select View | Footnotes. In the footnote pane there is a
toolbar with a dropdown list allowing you to select Footnote Text, Footnote
Separator, Footnote Continuation Separator. I gather you've already found
this and figured out how to modify the separator. My impression is that the
separator is based on Normal style, so if you have modified that to have
different line spacing or an indent or Space Before/After, then you're
likely to have problems with the separator (and that's one very good reason
for leaving Normal alone and modifying Body Text instead). Your best bet for
modifying the separator "permanently" is to do it in the document template
(Normal.dot if that's the relevant one).

Thanks a million. Actually, I had mistakenly done a .5
indent in Normal. I found that out this morning when
everything I was defaulting to seemed to be indenting.

Your insight is very helpful. I am so accustomed to
having an IT Department to teach me/guide me/make
everything work for me. Being on my own this way is quite
time consuming and difficult.

Thanks again.
