Can someone kindly tell me which fonts SHOULD NOT be deleted in Win XP Pro?
Thanks, Joan

Why delete them? Just don't use them.

Are you saying it's a hassle to wade through the list?

Hi Mike:
This gives me an opportunity to ask another question. Bu first, the reason I
want to delete some of them is that I work with photoart and need to have
all kind of font styles available when creating art. Windows will remove
what I install an leave the native one and others and it is very
frustrating to have to stop in the midst of a great idea to delete and
reinstall fonts. So I thought it might be a good idea to remove the ones I
seldom use but are not essential to Windows.

The other question is, can anyone recommend a system or program that is
productive in font management in this kind of situation where I can just
access them by type and style? I saw various software on the web but
do not know how to decide, a recommendation would help narrow down choices.

Thanks, Josie

I tried an HP Font Manager utility aways back in the days of Win 98/ME and,
to be honest, never found it to be overly useful, notwithstanding the
limitation on number of fonts that could be installed at any one time.. XP
does not suffer like the Win 9x family did if there are hundreds of fonts on
the system..

I am still not sure why you would want to delete and re-install fonts, but I
am sure that you have a valid reason in your own mind..

Font Managers are generally shareware, or 'try before you buy'.. I did find
a free one, however..

It may be just what you want..

Thanks Mike, will check it out. Also, are you saying that I do not have to
worry about the number of fonts I install because it will allow me to
install as many as I want? I was under the impression that the number was
limited therefore I'd have to remove those I don't ever use to save the
space to add the ones I have purchased and/or I like to use often. I don't
understand why when I've installed a bunch of these they do not show in the
font list of Word or Photoshop Elements. That is why I thought of deleting
some.

In Win9x the number of installed fonts was limited and more fonts did
tend to decrease system perfomance after a point, but this is apparently
not the case in XP.

Yes.

Simply put your fonts in a folder and put the folder
somewhere easy to get to.

I will load several HUNDRED fonts (just did this yesterday
for a client), into a folder. I called it "MSFONTS".

Put the whole folder full of fonts on the C drive.

That is, "C:\MSFONTS"

Go into the Control Panel, where you will find an icon
called "Fonts".

Double click, and you're going to be in a folder with a *
load of fonts that are already installed

AND THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR A N Y
Windows XP compatible program.
(that's the nice part about Windows. If you have installed
fonts / ___ for ONE Windows-compatible program, it's
/they're available for virtually everything else. I think
the ONE lone exception to this rule is Excel)

Once you have opened your Fonts folder/utility, Click on the
File tab.

You will then see the option that invites you to install a
new font. select "browse", and wind your way to your fonts
folder to the fonts you wish to install. As I said,
yesterday, I probably installed some 100 new fonts for a
client.

Windows will compare what you wish to install with what you
already have/the native fonts. Simply cancel the fonts that
are already installed, and Windows will take the rest.

I have yet to read any notice from Windows that there are
any limits to how many fonts you may have.

I HAVE had the occasion arise where Windows notified me that
a font I was trying to install was not compatible.

Good luck!

Nup!

I don't

You can't just plunk 100/1,000 fonts in a folder and
consider them "installed".

You have to use the Windows Control Panel option so that
Windows knows they're there.

And since --- last I heard-- the Big blue Monopoly--
Microsoft STILL hasn't published their code, many companies
STILL must GUESS how to make their software compatible, and
not all succeed with 100 % success.

(which is why we who KNOW the Microsoft game CONTINUE to
whine that Microsoft is STILL permitted to abuse the
consumer).

For better or worse, I have 852 fonts installed, and from what I can
ascertain, they all show in the various applications.. if some of yours do
not, you might want to try re-installing them..

Another factor is the 'default' printer.. it would appear that some fonts
will not show depending upon the printer set.. I know little of this, but
here is a reference site for you..

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm

Incidentally, I tried the 'font' program out.. it appears to be ok..

I have been searching aimlessly thru MS (I have eyestrain now) fruitlessly
searching for answers to font problems. Maybe this is the place to ask: a
friend emailed me a zipped font. It installs fine on my laptop which is
still using Win2000nt -- but I can't get this font to be recognize on my
desktop PC running XP, just the regular XP. This font is a version of
Cezanne. There is already one called Cezanne. And no matter how I install
it the original Cezanne is the only one that appears. I have tried renaming
the new one. I have tried deleting the old one then installing the new one.
It still shows the first style. This is extremeely frustrating as I'm
working on a music video and want to use this special cezanne font for titles
and I can't get it to load. What's the deal does anyoen have an idea what's
going wrong? I read above where you say to install from control panel and I
just tried that with renewed hope. Nope, didn't work.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!!!

Windows XP Pro is truly overflowing with fonts.

I currently have 1,537 of them -- taking up 208 MB.

Spenc....1549 ??? Do you see a performance change with all those
fonts??? Thanks for the input

No, no performance degradation.

How do you know which ones can be safely deleted?

Several of my fonts appear in all capital letters. Are those the symbol
fonts? If so, those would be my first choice to drop. How many symbol
fonts does Windows really need, and how can we tell by looking at a
particular font if it is needed by one or more installed programs?

One utility that might help (though it's of limited usefulness if
you've already moved all those fonts into the %WinDir%\Fonts folder)
is this cute little free font renamer:
<http://www.styopkin.com/free_font_renamer.html>

Give it a directory (except the default fonts directory) and it will
rename *all* the font files in that directory to a meaningul name
based on the name of the font.

It's one of those little things that makes you go d'oh! Why didn't I
write that?
