What is the best font type to use for the expression of complex mathematical
representations in text format, i.e. derivitives, integrals, and othe
calculas inspired symbols?

It isn't really a question of "the best font type".

If you're inserting isolated symbols in regular text, use either the Symbol
font or the mathematical symbols from one of the Unicode fonts (Arial
Unicode, Lucida Sans Unicode) or even Times New Roman, depending on where
you find the symbol you want. See

If you're writing a document that contains mathematical equations, use the
Equation Editor (you may have to run the Office installer in the Add
Features mode to install it) or get MathType from http://www.mathtype.com.

I use OpenOffice Math for that purpose:
http://www.openoffice.org/product2/math.html

The result can be inserted into any other document as an image or an
object.
