Font Problem

My windows software only displays a symbolic type font. All the windows system functions such as desktop and menus, explorer etc all display this font which is unreadable and makes my PC impossible to navigate when using any windows based software

HTML seems OK when I am using the internet (aol9 is my main browser but also use ie6) but again all the browser pull down menus etc are all using this unreadable font

I cannot adjust any settings in the setup menu as I am working blind and cannot find them.

I am using XP SP1 and recently installed SP1a. The very next reboot was when the problem started. However I am not sure if this SP1a was the problem as I have also recently installed McCaffee QuickClean which performed some maintenance on the PC also just prior to the offending reboot.

Since the problem occurred I have scanned my system for viruses with uptodate Norton AV2002 and Pandasoft online and came up with a clean sweep on both occasions so I don't think a virus is the problem

Have I lost / deleted the font files and need to restore them ? or does it sound like a simpler 'setting' to correct. Any suggestions are welcome

Thank
Eddi

If you already had SP1 installed, you should not have installed SP1a.

Thanks. The first link you give refers to running the setup program to restore fonts. Is this program on the setup and installation disk supplied with the machine ? I do not have this file, my machine came from Packard Bell and all the windows files are behind a partion already on my hard disk. Or would there be an application on the Emergency Boot disk supplied I can use

As far as the other links go I cannot navagate through my explorer system hence not able to select the options described with out guessing what the options I select are doing

Other things I have noticed -

In DOS (which works fine) I do not have a c:\windows\font directory. Could this be missing or is it just hidden

I can open notepad and type in text. The font is the standard readable text as always.

Is there a down load I can get from somewhere that will re-install the fonts automatically

Alternatively could do execute a system restore point. Can I start this from DOS as this would be easier to do than blindly go through the windows menus

If only I had another working PC to translate, its like my PC has suddenly decided to speak Japanese !!!!

Thank
