I am running WinXP Home and the fonts icon is missing from my control pannel.
Does anyone know how to get it to show up?

Try this...

Start | Run | Type: control fonts | OK

Does that work?

Or navigate to...
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

Wesley,
No, neither worked. In both cases, I get an error message saying, "The path
'::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\::{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-08002B30309D}\::{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}'
does not exist or is not a directory.

Is there a way I can re-install a portion of WinXP Home that correctly sets
up the fonts / icons without doing a complete install? I am thinking there
should be a way to de-compress the system files realted to fonts and drop
them into the Fonts directory.

Think it will work?

Wes,
Slight correction to prior message. . . When I navigate to c:\windows\fonts,
I can see fonts in the directory, but do not get any executable icons letting
me see the fonts icon in the control pannel.

Kathleen,

I just wondered if you could do what you needed to do with fonts from there.
Or do you just want to try to fix the missing icon?

{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} = My Computer
{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-08002B30309D} = I have no idea
{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152} = CLSID for Fonts

Open regedit and see if you have the following keys.

Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}
(Default)
REG_SZ
Fonts

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524
152}
(Default)
REG_SZ
Fonts

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Contro
lPanel\NameSpace\{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}
(Default)
REG_SZ

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Approved
{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}
REG_SZ
Fonts

Wes,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}
(Default)
REG_SZ --> exists, but it does not say anything about fonts (value data
field is blank)
Below the (Default) it says Info Tip REG_ExpandSZ
Below Info Tip it says Localized String REG_ExpandSZ

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524152}
(Default) and all other items same as above including Info Tip and Localized
String

The other two items do not exist. If adding these gets my fonts icon back
in the control pannel, can you walk me through the steps to add this into the
registry. Thanks!

Kathleen,

After all the research I've been doing on this... You're using the New Look
Control Panel aren't you? I switched to that view and Fonts is *real* hard
to find. If you are using the new view Control Panel, try this....

Open the Control Panel
Click on: Appearance and Themes
In the left hand pane,
under: See Also
Fonts

If, for some reason, See Also doesn't list anything...
Click the chevrons, the Vs, to expand See Also.

Or to make it easier to find all the icons,
click on Switch to Classic View.

If you still can't find the Fonts icon post back. I've exported the
relevant keys from my registry and I can send them to you.

Wes,
Thank you for continuing to find a solution for me. I am using the classic
view. When I flip it back to the category view as you suggest (i have it in
classic view now), I can get to the fonts Icon but it does not do anything
when I click on it, which to me indicates the font icon that shows up is not
linked to anything.

Let's try up-loading the keys from your registry to mine.

Kathleen,

Since you're using CDO and not a real newsreader like Outlook Express you
can't even see any files that I might attach here, let alone download them.
E-mail me. (e-mail address removed) Remove the 123.

Wes,
Thank you so much. I downloaded the files you sent me via e-mail, unzipped
them to my desktop, and merged them into the registry. It worked perfectly.
