Is it possible to alter the way the drop down box of fonts works?

When I am selecting a font - after looking at it in document and deciding
to choose another font - I would like to carry on from that point in the
list - but it always goes back to the top of the l ist and you have to scroll
down again to find out where you had got to in selecting a font? Thi just
annoys me so much - is it possible to change this ?

Not really. But you can click in the text box portion and begin typing
the name of the font you can quickly scroll through the list.
Otherwise use the Format/Font dialog to pick up where you left off.

If you elect to use the Font command on the toolbar and are displaying
recently used fonts then the typing method may not work for you since
Word will select the font in the recently used list rather than
scrolling the list. In that case this Reg hack will turn it off. In
the Registry navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<VersionNo>\Word\Options

and add the following String value:
Name: NoFontMRUList
Value: 1

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

You can't change the behavior of the font dropdown box, but you'll find the
"Format | Font" menu works the way you seem to prefer.
